S-E-X and you

One day, when I was 14 yrs old, my mom sat down next to me and stared for what seemed like hours. I could tell that she wanted to say something, but had no idea what was taking her so long to just say it. Finally, after a seemingly endless awkward amount of time, she looked me and said “You know about birth control right?” and looking in her eyes I knew it was more of a hopeful statement, rather than a question she actually wanted to know about. I replied with, “yea they told us about it in Sex Ed at school,” and my mom, who was/is one of the most opinionated, most liberal people you would ever meet looked not only relieved, but happy with my answer! She smiled and then said, “good… well ok. Good,” and then walked back to her room and that was the last I ever heard about it again.

That was my birds and the bees talk.

When it came time to venture out on my own, I was armed with very little info on sexual health and birth control…cause according to my friends (my only source of information for wayyy too long), the guy took care of that. God, were we naive! Thankfully, now there are websites like Bedsider.

The Bedsider site is a place where women can explore, compare and contrast all available methods of contraception, set up birth control and appointment reminders, view videos of their peers discussing personal experiences, and view animated shorts that debunk myths about birth control. Basically- a place for you to take charge of your own sexual health.

Have questions? Great- there is an are just for that. Bedsider answers tons of questions ranging from “What pill is the best to take?” to “What should I do if I want to have sex on my fertile days?” Basically- it’s an area for you to ask anything and get an answer.

Bedsider arms you with information to make decisions involving your body and your sexual health. They even have a section where you can watch testimonials from real people (yup- guys weigh in too! So you know what your boyfriend and husband might be wanting to ask or how “it” feels) so you feel more like you are in a community of your peers and you are getting up to date information- not like those videos from Elementary school that our grandparents probably watched.

As a modern woman, I love that I can go to Bedsider and find an answer to any question I may have. I have been with my husband for a LONG time, but there is always something new to learn and it is up to me to be incontrol of my reporductive health. Being the mother of a girl, I like knowing that one day, when she is ready, I can lead her to Bedsider and she too can find answers to the many questions she probably won’t want to ask me about (but by then she’ll be 30, so it’s OK ;) ).

Do yourself a favor and check out Bedsider. You can also check out their videos (some are hilarious) on YouTube, and find them on Facebook or Twitter.

I think this site is not only important for girls wanting to learn about their reproductive health, but could also be beneficial to Moms that need to talk to their daughters about this sensitive issue. Thanks for the information. I wish it was available when I had the talk with my daughter 20 years ago!

Funny, I think my Mom gave me the EXACT same Birds and Bees speech, but she added, “dont have sex till your 35″ into it, lol!
Great site, definetly one that will be helpful for me, trying to find Pro’s and cons of different Birth control is a pain, so many options it gets confusing! I will be going over and checking it out very soon! Thanks!
