Education and How It Shaped Me #WaveforChange

When I was a little girl, I never fit in. I was gifted at a young age, and always was afraid of either being too smart around my peers or not smart enough when with those of my “testing” level. I went through this for several years, until I met teachers that recognized that I was different.

My Algebra II teacher (I was 14..yup) saw that I could make formulas click easily by watching it performed once. So she always helped me by having an example for me, even if I had to ask her after class… she made sure I “got it.” She made me understand I could always work through even the most complicated formulas. My AP English Literature, who she assigned the most amazing stories and she never had us just do question and answers, or just regular essays. She found ways to make sure the story stuck and that we understood it from all angles. By discussing, and engaging…she helped me love literature and appreciate the written word. My Theater teacher… who, well… she taught me to let go and just be me. Sure she taught us method and great plays, but what I came out with, was knowing that I was unique and that was ok.

These teachers may never know it, but it’s because of what they taught me, that I am who I am today. As a writer/blogger and former paralegal… I have used each of their teachings in my life. Without their dedication to educating me, and all students, I wonder, who would I be today? Would I have had half the opportunities I have had if I didn’t receive that education.
