Don’t Judge A Camera By It’s Size – Nikon Coolpix S01 Review

I’ll admit it. When I opened this camera, I chuckled. My first thought was “Oh my god, this is the cutest little toy camera EVER.” I had serious doubts something so tiny could produce the quality that Nikon is now known to be part of. I was wrong.

As I already mentioned in my last Nikon post, I am not a fan of point and shoots. It’s a control issue for me and well, I need it. However, I have a family and we run around like crazy. Sometimes, when we’re at like, Disneyland or Knott’s or the beach even, I do not wanna lug my big DSLR and lenses but I want something that can capture the memories just as beautifully but way more compact. Enter Nikon CoolpixS01.

Nikon CoolpixS01 Size

See what I mean by tiny? That is my actual business card which is standard business card size, roughly 3.15 in x 2.25in, and the camera is SMALLER. I looked around to see where I had to stick a battery in or an SD card, and well, I didn’t. There is a built in battery, which you charge as you would your iPhone or smartphone, and it has close to an 8GB memory. The jpgs saved are high resolution (about 10MP)  but you needn’t worry about running out of room, or battery, for plenty of time.

Here you will see your shooting modes and filters:

Also, the camera has the capability of adding the filter before the shot, or after the shot is taken (see bottom right of collage). I played with it at home, with low light settings to see how it would compare to my 18MP DSLR with a standard lens. Here are my results:

None of the photos have been edited, so they are true color. The colors are very vibrant, and once I got a better handle on the filters, I was able to grab a good shot in a low light environment. I have full confidence that this would be a great camera on the go for quick and easy pics with my family.

For comparison’s sake, I also shot one with my DSLR:

The main difference is the aperture control, which is mind blowing considering how big my DSLR is and how tiny the S01 is.

I also really like it’s durableness. I am known for dropping things like my phone, everywhere I go. This camera takes a licking and comes out without a scratch. While I think it’s perfect for moms who are looking for a nice, easy camera to take pictures of their family, I think it would also make a great camera for the teen or child in your life. I had my daughter walk around with it, and it was a perfect fit for her, and it’s now her camera. She loves being able to take her own pictures, and I like knowing not only will she take good quality shots, but, that it is a camera that is built to last.

I know all about lugging the big camera around everywhere. I do that now, because like you, I was not thrilled with the quality of point and shoot pictures. This would be a great starter for my son to practice on because he has quite an eye for photography as well.

That is a pretty cool camera. My current camera needs to be replaced so maybe when I’m ready and have the money I would consider the Nikon Coolpix.

wow, crazy how well that little guy works. I hate taking my big camera because it hurts my neck. I would love having something this little just to carry with me at all times.

I could really use a camera like this. Some how my pictures turn out not so great. I really could use the filter, since most of my pictures always look like the were taken in low light. Great review!

Wow, i wouldn’t have thought you could get such great pictures from a small camera either. I’m constantly taking pix of my 2 year old grandson and this would be perfect for me. Thanks for the great review!
