What do you imagine it would be like to meet a Disney Legend? I’m talking like someone that not only was a part of your childhood, but also your parents, and now your children? For me, it was awe-inspiring as I sat and had lunch with Kathryn Beaumont, the voice of Wendy in Peter Pan, and Alice in Alice in Wonderland.
Kathryn started her career at the age of 10 where she went from London to California to be the star of Alice in Wonderland. A couple years later, she was back on the Disney set, this time as Peter Pan’s Wendy. She only has fond memories of working on both films, and remembers Walt Disney from her time on the sets and being “amazed at how easy it was to reach him.” She recalled a day where to sound men where having a dispute over what sequence to use, so they called Walt. She was so surprised when down came Walt, listened to the sequences and just said “I don’t know what you two were worried about, the first sequence is fine.”
During the production of Peter Pan, the animators asked Kathryn to live-act some scenes out so that they could capture emotions and faces. One such instance involved flying, which she recalled being a little frightened of. After Peter Pan wrapped, she finished high school and went to college where she would then go on to become a 2nd grade teacher…right here in the San Fernando Valley. I asked her if anyone recognized her by her voice and she said that no, not really but her students knew and whenever there was a re-release the kids at school would get excited.
Wouldn’t you if you had a teacher who lent her voice to characters that have been and will always be treasured? Kathryn Beaumont is indeed a treasure, and you can revisit her Wendy now on DVD/BluRay.
