Dell XPS 18 All In One: Portable Tech for the Whole Family

Disclosure: I am a Best Buy WOLF Blogging Board Ambassador and received the item below for the purposes of this post. All thoughts, opinions are 100% my own.

My husband and I had been going back and forth over getting a home desktop computer for the whole family since about March, when after a student teacher meeting with Sofia’s Kinder teacher, we were told, here are some great websites for her to use daily. I know what you’re thinking…Internet? Computers? For a 5 yr old!?! I said the SAME THING, and that’s why it took us so long to even decide to look at computers. I owned my first computer when I was 21 and have pretty much learned how to use (and care) for them in a trial by fire mode. My husband isn’t very techy and my daughter used desktops at school, but only requested one at home to play the Sofia the First games, so I knew it would come on me to decide what would work best for all three of us to use.

Dell XPS18

Notice I said three? Yea… two seem to like it too much.

Well, 4 months later, I couldn’t decide on something for all of us but that was OK, as a member of the Best Buy Blogging Board, Best Buy made that choice for me by giving me a Dell XPS 18 All-in-One to review. When I picked it up at the store, surprise number one came, this was not the desktop I imagined. It was packed in a very lightweight box with a simple carrying handle and was not heavy at all. Compared to the big towers, screens and accessories I used to lug out of stores, it was quite a surprise…so I doubted it’s power. I mean how much could one simple box do? Oh….the Dell was out to prove me wrong.

I got it home and set it up on my kitchen table (also called my let’s put everything on here til I find a place to put it table) and it was SO EASY. It was out of the box and plugged in, ready for use in about 5 minutes. I logged in with my husband’s Halo playing email account and there appeared Windows 8. I quickly installed the Windows 8 Office Suite and the 6 month Internet Security/Antivirus that comes free with the system and we were ready to roll. Here is a quick video I did just to show off the touch screen, portability and Windows 8.

This All In One is 11.2 in high, with a width of 18.3 in and a depth of .7 in. It weighs 5 lbs, so it is much heavier than say an iPad (1.44 lbs) or Samsung Galaxy (12 ounces), so it is not meant to use as a grab and go. It’s meant for a multi-purpose family on the go. For us, it means I (who are we kidding, I mean my husband) can take it to the kitchen with a great recipe, or my daughter can take it to her room and watch a little Netflix, use a learning app/site or even play Sofia the First on

It even means I can use it to work from (like I am now). My worry about space? Totally unfounded. The XPS 18 has 500 GB Hard Drive, paired with a 1.9GHz processor and 4GB of RAM (expandable to 8GB). I had a laptop that had 80 GB hard drive and I didn’t run that one to the ground, so I know this one will last us a very long time. In fact, it’s getting hard to part with…in a couple weeks, we are going “glamping” and getting set up in a cabin with WiFi, so you this baby is coming with us. If you’re looking for your next family computer…drop that bulky tower and opt for this visual beauty instead. You won’t regret it.

That is GOOD TO KNOW!! I have two kids and we definitely need to add a computer to our arsenal; they are getting to the age where they need to use it for school and we just can’t all be on the same device at the same time. Thanks for sharing this great info! It’s always nice when someone else makes tough decisions for you and it turns out well :)

I would love to have this computer. What a great way to go for the whole family. I love that it’s not big and bulky like the old model I have.

Wow! That looks pretty cool. I’m in desperate need of a computer and have been trying to find one that bridges the gap between mobility and power/features. This one seems to provide the right combination of each.

How do you find the Windows 8 OS?

Large tower – check. Wired keyboard – check. Wired mouse – check. Separate monitor taking up space – double check. Portable? No Way! I want this one.
