I attended a media event for the purposes of this post. No other compensation was received. All opinions are my own.
The holiday season is in full swing and in Southern California, there is only one place to celebrate it and celebrate it properly. That place is the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim, CA! When my family and I went for the amazing media preview event, we were in for quite a magical journey. How did it begin? With the debut of Winter Dreams- World of Color at Disney’s California Adventure, complete with a virtual choir, we were truly enthralled.
Winter Dreams runs through January 6th and stars the incredible Josh Gad as his beloved character, Olaf from Disney’s Frozen. I got a chance to talk to Josh about becoming the voice of Winter Dreams as Olaf.
On becoming the voice of “Winter Dreams”
About 3 months ago I got a phone call saying “we’d love for you to host the winter version of World of Color” and I literally think I squealed like a little child because I was so excited and because I was such a huge fan of everything these guys do, but this show is one of the most impressive shows I had ever seen and to be a part of the winter overlay of it, I couldn’t be more grateful and I’m kinda pinching myself.
On experiencing Winter Dreams through the eyes of his daughter
She’s at that age now where she’s starting to recognize this stuff and the synapses are saying one of these things are not like the other…. why is my father speaking like a snowman in a water screen?
I think that that’s the most joyful part of this for me, is that I can share it with my own daughter. I remember going to Walt Disney World as a young kid and seeing those firework shows and seeing like the Main Street Electrical Parade and the impression that it left on me at such a young age was so unbelievable, and so profound and now, to have my daughter associate her father with that is incredible.
On how Winter Dreams was created
They brought me in and Steve Davidson did a recording session with me. He gave me this amazing dialog and then they let me play!
And then they were like, oh by the way, you will be singing 5 different holiday songs including Feliz Navidad… and my spanish is not particularly great. So I sat there and struggled with it a couple of times and then we finally got it. It was so much fun. I mean, you record it in this little booth and then it becomes this [signals to Paradise Bay area] and you’re like, wait a second… where did all this water come from? It’s amazing.
Winter Dreams is playing nightly at Disney’s California Resort through January 6th.
