This Is My Family #LaFamiliadeHoy {12/5 Twitter Party Invite Enclosed}

This is a compensated campaign in collaboration with Johnson & Johnson and Latina Bloggers Connect. However, all opinions are my own.

When I was telling my friends Joe and I were expecting a little girl, beyond the initial shock (she was our little surprise), the next statement would usually be… “oh wow, a mixed baby! She’s going to be gorgeous.” It had never really occurred to me that she would be considered mixed. For awhile, it didn’t exactly hit me that my husband and I were pretty different. I was Latina, of Peruvian-Mexican descent and he was 100% “gringo”, of Irish, Welsh and German descent, so sure we looked different but we both liked the same music, the same movies, and all the same pop culture of our time. We just kinda made sense together.

Suddenly, we’re parents and that’s when I discovered how different our upbringings were. I started to embrace my culture not just for my daughter, but to hold on to pieces of those I loved, like my grandparents and carry their legacy. But, that wasn’t totally right either. I had to learn not just to embrace my culture, but his as well and blend them together to raise our girl to be all that she could be. My modern family is a little bit of everything. We embrace our respective cultures from both sides, and try to teach our daughter about all these puzzle pieces that formed together to create who she is so that she may someday teach it to her familia. La familia de hoy is different and evolving every day but it grows with love, acceptance and understanding of each other and ourselves.

Johnson & Johnson, in conjunction with Univision, is on the search for #LaFamiliadeHoy. Three families, selected by Johnson & Johnson, are in the running to be “La Familia de Hoy” and only one will win. This winning family will represent how modern, Latino families live and thrive. Read more about them and vote for your favorite by clicking here. I cast my vote for the Olivera Family…

They, much like my family, are of different backgrounds and cultures but bringing up their children to embrace all sides. Plus… you gotta hand it to them for looking so awake with three kids and one on the way! I would look like a bruja! Don’t forget to vote!
