On Saturday, June 28, 2014, more than 300 families gathered at Babies ‘R’ Us in Van Nuys, Calif., for a thrilling opportunity to meet Alarma TV’s host on the Estrella network, Lianna Grethel. I have to admit, I never anticipated such an action-packed afternoon. But, after learning that I would meet the internationally-popular host, model and actress, I, too, was doubly in awe. I distinctly recalled watching Lianna as a former model on NBC’s hit game show, “Deal or No Deal.” However, I’m certain many of you are familiar with her from Ilona llega con la lluvia (1996), Maria Bonita (1995) and Mascarada (1995). She was memorable on those telenovelas.
I spent a lot of time with Lianna that afternoon, and found her to be extremely warm and friendly. The sweet mother of two has an 18-year old daughter, Valentina, who’s entering her senior year of high school. She’s also following in her mama’s footsteps as a model and actress. Valentina starred in a Toyota of Orange commercial, awhile ago playing a cheerleader, and the resemblance the mama-daughter is uncanny. However, Lianna isn’t ready to see her daughter break free yet. “There’s tricky people in the entertainment industry. So, I teach my daughter to be very careful,” warns Lianna. Raised in Columbia, Lianna first began modeling when she was 16. Her mom, Consuela was also a model.
Along with Valentina, Lianna is celebrating new milestones with 14-month-old son, Liam. She’s tackling this experience slightly different. For instance, Lianna vows to be more protective, and leaning toward her Columbian roots. This goes against typical “Western” tradition, Lianna admits. Although still young, Liam is very energetic.
When asked about her shopping experiences at Babies R Us, Lianna recalls, “Eighteen years ago, when I was pregnant, I used to buy everything for my daughter. And now, it’s magic! I’m back,” she says with a smile. “I love this store. I started buying all the things I needed for my son. In fact, years ago, I used to look on the Pampers’ box and say, ‘I wish my baby could be on the box,’ ” Lianna says with a giggle. “Now look! They called me, asking if I could be the model with Liam. Here I am speaking for them,” Lianna says.
Lianna also has advice for girls looking to get into the modeling and acting business. “This is a really hard and dangerous career. Watch out for sneaky producers, directors and photographers! I had my mom and she always supported me and taught me how to recognize those wrong people,” Lianna cautions. “But, I always go with my daughter! Allow them to follow their dreams. Give them the kind of support you know they need,” the internationally- popular model says.
Like most new moms, Lianna appreciates Babies ‘R’ Us for its one-stop-shop. “Absolutely! I can get my wipes, clothes, and I use Pampers Swaddlers on Liam because the experts at Babies ‘R’ Us suggested it’s soft and gentle on my baby’s skin,” says Lianna.
For me, as a single mom of three girls, ages 6, 14 and 18, Procter & Gamble has been my choice from day one. I pick up everything from Crest® toothpaste to Vicks® chest medicine; Gain® detergent to Downy® fabric softener; Charmin® toilet paper to Always® sanitary pads. My shopping list creates its own life.
Once my interview with Lianna ended, family festivities began. Music from Que Buena 104.5FM/94.3FM continued spinning outside, while the crowd inside grew larger. Several more families posed for photos with Lianna then received signed autographs. On Air Que Buena Radio Personality Christian Ramos entered the store, to lead a series of crowd-pleasing, call-and response, songs, games and dances for the next few hours. Giveaways and raffle prizes, included $250 cash, movie tickets, concert tickets to see the platinum-selling banda, Pico Rivera, as well as, Babies ‘R’ Us gift cards for $250, $1,000 and a shopping spree – great deals for growing families!
That day, I also won a grand prize. I had the pleasure of meeting one of the sassiest mamas in the world!
