Summer has been the season of the super hero for as long as I can remember. On blistering hot days, my family and I would head to the theater to bask in the air conditioning while eating goobers, popcorn and indulging in a double (or triple, if we were extra daring) feature of whatever may have been out on that particular day. The stories were all the same: we meet a hero who has to save a girl, a world or both while looking cool and blasting stuff to smithereens. The formula worked so Hollywood never changed it. Until now.

In Guardians of the Galaxy, the latest installment in the Disney-Marvel Universe, all action film pre-requisites are thrown out the window and replaced by warmth, heart, bad-ass (can I say bad ass? Oh well, they are) women and one totally awesome talking raccoon… and, it’s the quite possibly the best action movie ever made. Here’s why:
Three… count them… THREE awesome women who are smart, fierce and forces to be reckoned with. One is even the leader of a planet (go Glenn Close!). And guess what? They don’t even talk about guys nor do they need saving. Halle-freaking-luhah.
This band of misfits doesn’t start off great but in the end they stand together and with each other because they have learned to care about each other. I would be neglectful to mention that Rocket and Groot’s duo is one of the best pairings since R2D2 and C3PO. I seriously would hang with those two all day long. I AM GROOT.
Overcoming Your Past
While this is a common theme in the Disney-Marvel universe, in GOTG, these guys are… in words used by Peter Quill, “Losers”. In all senses of the word- they are a group that has lost everything: families, friends, their planets! Yet they learn to work together and put their own causes aside to save the universe. That should be a rule- become besties, save the world. The end.
Funny For All Ages
This is probably what blows it out of the water for me. I always see movies that try to appeal to both and usually it fares more on one side than the other. Not with GOTG. The comedy was witty, fun and I didn’t have to cover my kids ears. There are 2 moments of innuendo that will fly over kids heads and some swearing, but nothing your kid wouldn’t hear while you are driving in traffic. Chris Pratt is HILARIOUS. Like- smart funny which makes him the super hero you want to have beers with (sorry Tony Stark). But the real surprises come from Rocket and Groot. Just how funny can a character that says 3 words be? VERY. Trust me.
Love and Family
So, we saw this in The Avengers… a team that bands together and forms an unlikely family. But in The Avengers, they each float off to live their own lives with their own families. With GOTG, that’s it- they have each other…and with a killer soundtrack, they journey off to cause some trouble and save more worlds.
Have you ever had an amazing moment happen and when you think back to it, you kinda imagine this fabulous song playing in the background (don’t lie- I know you have Don’t Stop Believin’ playing at some point)? Well, James Gunn pretty much created the greatest soundtrack ever of not new music for a movie set in space. Jackson 5, The Runaways, 10cc, Redbone, and more. I have yet to stop playing it and it’s been 2 weeks. I’m ready to save universes. Get the Guardians of the Galaxy Soundtrack here via CD or MP3.
I guess what I’m saying is- GO SEE IT. Take your kids (there is some cursing but nothing too bad). Take your grandma and then go again and take your dog (or- your plant!). Guardians of the Galaxy is entertaining, funny, smart and the greatest action movie EVER.
Guardians of the Galaxy is now playing and is Rated PG-13.
