I have received one or more of the items below as a Best Buy WOLF Blogger & Ambassador. All opinions are my own.
I’m not a photographer by any means, but I can be pretty handy with a camera, particularly with my phone (just see my instagram feed!). I love taking photos and I am always on the go, so I document my life via my phone. However, for certain situations, I needed more power without carrying a DSLR everywhere. Something small…but that I could use with the phone I already have.
Enter the Sony QX10.
The Sony QX10 is an attachable lens that connects to your phone via WiFi and a Sony PlayMemories app. Once connected, you can take photos either on your phone or on the lens itself, as it has a push button on the side. You can also insert a microSD card into the lens itself, and skip the connecting but there is no display, so if you are OK eyeing a photo, then it would work OK. Plus, I have found it is best to set up on a flat surface and zoom, than to hold and zoom to take a photo. There is more blur and noise when you hold it and zoom but sat on a surface, the photos are gorgeous. You can see the a small blur on the Chris Pratt/Zoe Saldana photo I took at a press junket below. I was about 5 rows back from the main table, with low fluorescent lights and was zoomed in about 4-5x.
But then, in the same instance I got this great photo of Vin Diesel.
I should note that the reason I had a lot of shake is that I have a Samsung S5, which the QX10 does not attach to, the phone is just too wide and I’m crossing my fingers that they will make an attachment that will fit my phone cause I really love how the photos are looking. If you have an iPhone or Sony Experia, you should be good to go with attaching, I think the S-line of phones are all too wide.
The reason for the gorgeous color, is not only does this lens have 10x optical zoom but it also has a 1/2.3” Exmor R CMOS sensor to increase the light sensitivity. I took the photo below of the sweet and talented iJustine while at VidCon. The light in the expo was TERRIBLE but this photo came out amazing. I was about 4 ft away, and this was using no zoom.
I don’t want to go super technical, so I’ll tell you what my favorite feature was (beyond the color and zoom). The ability to actually self take a family portrait. I set the QX10 on a table, had my husband and daughter pose to get the distance correct, grabbed my phone and stood with them….and shot the photo. Here’s the first shot (see- sans makeup, that’s how impromptu this was) where you see the phone.
..and the second where I got smart and hid the phone.
I did not get a chance to try the video component but I’m sold. The color is gorgeous and it gives me some extra power zoom when I really need it. I would like the attachment to be made wider, cause I know that would eliminate the blur from my shake (ha..my shake). For now, I use it to get in the photo and catching celebrities tell funny stories about giving men body image issues.
