The announcement of the all female Ghostbusters has definitely set the interwebs on fire especially with the announcement of the all-male Ghostbusters too. Opinions are divided and will probably be till the movie comes out and everyone realizes the world didn’t end with women in the leads (maybe even made it awesomer!). In the meantime, in order to keep the progressive momentum going, let’s talk about a few other cult fave franchises that would definitely work if certain key roles were gender swapped.
Oh and maybe won’t need male companion reboot films.
Criminal, time traveling teen, archeologist, alien detectives and Goblin Queen, here are some of our picks for female reboots.
Escape From New York
The Synopsis: The cult hero classic centers around a convicted bank robber (Kurt Russell as Snake Plissken) who is sent into Manhattan, which is considered a maximum security prison in this dystopic future world, to rescue the president of the United States after they crash land smack in the middle of all the criminal activity.
The Reboot Cast: Emily Blunt. After her tough as nails performance as Rita Vrataski in Edge of Tomorrow and her intense body work in the film, she would kill it as Plissken. Give her an eye patch at that snake tat on her abs while she does that plank. Aww yeah, perfection. As for the Duke? Beyonce could definitely fill those shoes. Wouldn’t it be awesome to see her go toe to toe with Blunt? My vote for president goes to Amy Pohler or even Tina Fey because New York.
Back To The Future
The Synopsis: When Marty McFly is accidentally sent 30 years into the past in a time traveling DeLorean invented by his friend Doc. Brown, he has to make sure his parents get together at prom in order to make sure he’s eventually created.
The Reboot: Okay so in order to not even touch what made the classic so beloved, lets not mess with the decades it is involved with. So we set this in the modern day and the protagonist goes back to 1985 to get her parents together. But just for giggles, the Prom should still be a 50’s themed Enchantment Under the Sea Shindig (Sadie Hawkins too). Anyways, Marty McFly could be played by a young actress like Chloe Grace Moretz who has comedy chops. Doc Brown though, should definitely be played by an actress who can be both strange and funny like Tilda Swinton. She can even do the electric blonde hair too! Now for her parents, lets turn her dad into a jock played by Ansel Elgort and her mom should be a quirky geeky girl played by AnnaSofia Robb. Wait a second, Ansel in a tux like McFly with Chloe feels familiar…oh wait they went to prom in Carrie! Well, if he and TFIOS costar Shailenne Woodley can be in two franchises together then why not?
The Synopsis: Adventurer and Archaeologist Indiana Jones is hired to find the Ark of the Covenant by the United States government before the Nazis get to it.
The Reboot: Jennifer Lawrence. Before Star Wars Episode seven was announced, it was long contested that Jennifer Lawrence could play the offspring of one Han Solo and Princess Leia. Well then, she’d be an ideal candidate to portray a fem Indiana Jones. It would be nice to see Rachel Weisz return to the archeology action film scene as Indy’s mother.
Men In Black
The Synopsis: A street smart NYPD detective finds himself tangled up in a case that’s out of this world with a secret organization that recruits him. He’s teamed up with a seasoned stoic member of the Men in Black to take on some aliens threatening planet Earth.
The Reboot: No, not Willow Smith. Too young! It’d be fantastic to see Samira Wiley take on the role of Jay, Will Smith’s character. Would be great to see what she could do in a comedy and with a character tonally different than her Orange is the New Black character. To mix things up, Tommy Lee Jones’ character Kay could be played by Lucy Liu who can do no nonsense and take on a get the job done sort of attitude.
The Synopsis: When a teenager wishes their half brother Toby to be taken by the Goblin King, they find that it comes at a price when they want to take it back. Jareth King of the Goblins desires the teen Sarah on the cusp of adulthood and challenges them to complete their Labyrinth in thirteen hours or he’ll keep the child.
The Reboot: An at least 18 year old young man, lets say Maze Runner’s Dylan O’Brien, wishes their toddler half sister gone and has this request granted by the Goblin Queen played by TILDA SWINTON. Yes, again on the list because she can pretty much gender bend any character into a compelling and captivating performance. She already has Bowie down pat.
