Get to know Los Angeles by getting to know the places where artists go to make or break it in the industry. We got to go on a fantastic adventure through some of the city’s hidden gems with tons of history as part of the Up and Coming tour. Here are our fave facts about some of the places we saw.
AMDA College and Conservatory of the Arts
Acting schools are aplenty in Los Angeles. What makes AMDA super interesting is how seeped the school is in the history of the city. The campus building and bungalows boast the architecture of the golden age of Hollywood. The elevators to the top are mint from the era the place was built. The view atop the school is incredible. So many actors have come out of the place and gone on to be in features and shows.
This school not only functions as a place of education but it also serves as a networking hub for all it’s students. We learned that the building stays open pretty much 24/7. This gives students access to work on their music, wander around and meet others to lend their resources and grow. Forming new bonds and future partnerships start at school. Members of acts such as Avenged Sevenfold and Red Hot Chili Peppers attended.
The improv space may have started over in Chicago but it’s LA location is the place for aspiring performers. Since this location is in the heart of Hollywood, members from all walks of life roll through. It’s a place to work out the funny muscles, catch some shows and see who pops in and out. It’s a fave and where many of the hottest acts in comedy got their start like Tina Fey and Jason Sudeikis.
The Record Parlour
This was our favorite spot on the tour. It’s a shop that boasts a large selection of records from every genre from all time! Well pretty much. If old book smell is awesome, the next best thing is old record smell of their sleeves. The place was definitely built as a love letter to spinning fine tunes in the format it started out in. And they had so many different genres. Halloween ambiance music for example with animal monster sounds. When we went there was even a live act doing a private show before embarking onto their next part of their journey at South By South West the film, music and tech festival in Austin, Texas.
This nightclub is a music industry go to. It is the starting point for some of the biggest names in music like Katy Perry, Adele and most recently acts like Hozier. Music execs stop by to listen to the latest and pick up the cream of the crop. The small intimate venue is a fave for keepin it real and grabbing good drinks while listening to fantastic music. They’re actually expanding and adding an adjacent room for more live acts. Every year they pride themselves when a musician who’s played there, that they have helped cultivate, wins a Grammy.
