Visiting San Diego and looking for a place to stay? Then I can certainly recommend the SpringHill Suites Marriott Downtown Oceanside. On a recent trip with my family we got to check out all this hotel’s nearby sights and amenities and want to share with you!
Perhaps the hotel’s biggest draw is it’s awesome location. Located conveniently off the 5 about 82 miles from Los Angeles, Oceanside is located in San Diego’s North Shore. This beautiful beach town has something for every interest in your family – beaches, surfing, LEGOLAND, San Diego Zoo Safari Park, delicious cuisine and amazing seaside views for romantic moments. A not-to-be missed annual summer event is the Grunion Run when the beaches of Oceanside at nightfall are transformed by thousands of slippery fish who come up onto shore!
Open since 2014, the SpringHill Suites is steps from the beach and is home to an authentic baja-California-cuisine destination called the Hello Betty Fish House. Order the fish tacos or my favorite, the salmon burger.
The look and feel of the SpringHill Suites truly reflects the laid back beach attitude of the location matched with the area’s amazing natural beauty. The space is new, clean, bright and airy with a modern, beachy, California-style of design and decor. Lots of calming shades of blue and brown with an open concept lobby entrance area. Pops of bright colors come alive in the space with fun local surfing photography. Kids and adults, or kids at heart, will love the large lollypop bouquets at the front desk. Now that is a memorable welcome.
There is a comfortable, colorful sitting area with large chairs, and seats to the left of the reception desk and then a common area to the right where breakfast is served along with tables for game night! Popular board games are available for guests — Scrabble, checkers or Shoots and Ladders — a fun way to unwind after spending time at the beach or pool. There is also a fire pit outside for warming up on the cool beach nights.
From our room we could see one of town’s most famous attractions – the Oceanside Pier, the longest over-water wooden pier in San Diego measuring at 1,942 feet. Check out the resident pelicans, fish off the pier and have a meal at Ruby’s at the end. It’s a wonderful place to view the sunset while enjoying a burger and shake.
The rooms at SpringHill Suites are all studios. We had double beds, a modern desk area, usb ports (heaven to this blogger’s ears), chaise (pull out) couch, and a full bathroom with both bathtub, shower and yummy scented Paul Mitchell products. The water pressure is great, but remember their is a state-wide water shortage so take brief showers. Our room had a small balcony overlooking the pier. The beds were comfy, simple designed headboards, clean modern carpeting with a stained glass design, a iplayer/dock in the room to play your favorite songs and the pillows were up to our specs – not too firm or soft. The room also came equipped with a mini fridge, safe, and microwave.
Rooms with city views and partial ocean view rooms are equipped with a sound conditioner. Be warned that there is a freight train that runs through downtown which can be heard from hotel area, so the front desk does offer earplugs upon request. Based on the area it seems that this train noise issue is one that all ll the area hotels must make the best of. We didn’t find it distracting so I would definitely look into the ocean side rooms. On the flip side, if your family loves trains you should ask at the front desk and maybe try to catch a sighting.
Each morning there is a free breakfast. We were fans of the delicious selection of pastries, yogurts, fruits, cereal bar and hot items — eggs, sausage and bacon. The waffle maker with toppings was definitely a hit! A line even started to form! Breakfast is served in the hotel lobby beginning at 6:30am from Mondays through Fridays, and begins at 7 am on weekends.
There are also several common areas to choose from at the hotel. A gorgeous roof-top pool with surrounding views of the ocean and city. A jacuzzi area is open from 6-am-10pm on the 6th floor. An ocean-view deck is the 2nd floor to sit back and relax. And a 24-hour fitness center with views of the ocean.
The hotel offers valet parking for $24 per day with unlimited in/out. Call ahead so your car will be ready when you get downstairs. It’s not cheap, but you are in a busy area and I wouldn’t recommend using the metered parking spots for overnight stays.
We enjoyed our stay, everyone was extremely friendly and we would definitely return. I would also recommend this hotel for a couple’s getaway! Take in the stunning views, take a bike ride along the beach or visit the surf hotel to learn about Surfing culture! The beach has miles of surf!
