Okay, so after grueling hours in line this morning, like most of the D23 attendees, we got a jam packed 3 hours of Disney amazing-ness that will be on the Mouse house’s slate. At the beginning we started with a breathtaking sizzle reel that highlighted not just animation but live action sneaks too. (More on that tomorrow but we got a glimpse at Emma Watson as Belle in the yellow dress and I lost it.)
Deep breath for this two-parter, kay? Okay?
Now with Zootopia we got a couple scenes that showed us that this film stands apart from most other animal-centric animated features in that this is a world only inhabited by sentient animals. Each species has a land they hail from true to the environments of their nature and in fact the film is about nature and the power of will. Rich Moore and Byron Howard described the story about Judy Hopps(Ginnifer Goodwin) their spunky heroine who believes that anyone could be anything.
She sets out to become a police officer but ends up as a meter maid. When she gets wrapped up in a case above her pay grade with con artist fox Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman), she is forced to work with a natural enemy who lives by the motto: we are who we are. It’s a buddy adventure flick! We got to see the hilarious ice cream scene where Nick gets a scoop and the amazing DMV scene where the employee’s are SLOTHS! We also got to find out the film will feature original song from Shakira “Try everything” and the singer will also be playing a Gazelle.
John Lasseter came out to reveal that Disney’s next classic fairytale will be ‘Gigantic’ and that this choice was informed by the desire to tackle the tale of Jack and the Beanstalk and make, ‘a definitive version of that fairytale to live in people’s homes’ .
Director Nathan Geno came out to show quick art pieces of the look of the land above the beanstalk that’ inhabited by a civilization of giants. He explained that Jack’s story would be inspired by the ‘Spain’s Age of Discovery’ and that his unlikely friendship with an 11 year old 60 feet giant would be at the heart of this film. The Lopez and Anderson-Lopez team came out to give us a taste of the music from this film to follow up their hit songs from ‘Frozen’.
WE CAN’T WAIT FOR THIS!!! John Musker and Ron Clements team up once again for a fairytale feature that’s both of their legacy and a multi-cultural treat. Taking place in the South Pacific, Moana tells us the story of a young princess who seeks to revive the legacy of her people who were once known to be great navigators but mysteriously stopped.
Despite her father the chief telling her to stay in thier safe reef, the young Moana seeks to explore and takes to the seas. On her adventure she meets Maui, a demi-god of local legend how wields a powerful hook and the pair go off to discover their roots and find their true selves. On hand to celebrate this release was Dwayne Johnson, who will be voicing Maui, and along with revealing the look of his character, revealed that in his start as an entertainer he had a goal to be in a Disney picture someday and that dream is now coming true. Songwriter Lin-Manuel Miranda of Broadway’s ‘In the Heights’ was also announced to be on the music team and we were treated to a taste of the sound of the film. We also got mind blowing looks at the elemental effects being used to treat bodies of water or lava as characters who take form. The rocky and lava flow texture of the female villain was gorgeous. The water was also playfully fun as a part of the film’s ensemble. The voice actress for Moana has yet to be announced.
