Mother’s Day has always been a special day in our family. My grandfather always used to say that mothers were the heart and soul of a family. He showed it as he showered my grandmother and mom with gifts and affection every Mother’s Day. Growing up, it was the one day we had to make sure our mom and grandmother had a stress free day or we would be in really big trouble. I knew, even as a kid, that it was a day that not only did we celebrate being a family, but we got to show our mom that we appreciated her and all she did for us.
In 2007, I became a mom and my world flipped upside down. Everything I thought I knew about parenthood went flying out the window. My daughter became the center of my world and every single thing I did, I did for her.
When my first Mother’s Day rolled around, Sofia was only 9 months old and we were broke. I didn’t expect anything, I just wanted to be with my family. My husband let me sleep in, and when he knew I was about to wake, he sat my daughter next to me in bed, who gave me a huge gummy smile and happy baby squeals. I knew that very second that I had the best gift I could ever receive – the love of my baby and husband. That’s what Mother’s Day means to me today – a chance to appreciate all that I have and enjoy the love of my little family.
Every family is different, and Mother’s Day has different meanings for every single person but in the end, it’s just about embracing the ones you love.
The upcoming film, Mother’s Day in theaters everywhere April 29th, is about exactly that. The story about “Three women. Three stories” wants you to “let go of your fears. Embrace the ones you love.” I love that we get to see three very different experiences about motherhood and their mother’s day. Moms should be celebrated, but so should the families that they create and the movie gets to show a little insight into that. So get your Mother’s Day tickets and then grab your mom, your grandma, your aunt or your bestie and help her celebrate the mother of all holidays with a movie that celebrates moms just like her.
