Last fall, we traveled to Atlanta to go on the set of “Spider-Man: Homecoming”, courtesy of Sony Pictures. We got to learn so much about the highly anticipated film and got so hyped about it, that it seemed like forever before the first trailer was released. But, wow, when we got that first glimpse at what the movie might look like, I was blown away cause I knew it was going to be amazing. Now, several months later, Sony invited us back to head to the press conference in New York where we not only got to watch “Spider-Man: Homecoming”, we also got to chat with the amazing young cast of Tom Holland (Peter Parker/Spider-Man), Zendaya (Michelle), Jacob Batalon (Ned), Tony Revolori (Flash Thompson), and Laura Harrier (Liz) , as well as veteran actors Michael Keaton (Vulture), Robert Downey Jr (Tony Stark/Iron Man) and Marissa Tomei (Aunt May) plus director Jon Watts, and producers, former head of Sony, Amy Pascal, and Marvel President, Kevin Feige.
The cast was lively, hilarious and genuinely excited about this fresh new look at the classic teenage webslinging hero. Here are a few fun quotes from the cast about “Spider-Man: Homecoming.”
Kevin Feige on how Spider-Man joined the MCU
It was one of a handful of ‘Well, this will never be possible, but let’s dream about it’ moments at Marvel Studios. And now we’re sitting in front of all you nice people … having made the movie, [and] it’s unbelievable. It’s incredible.
Amy Pascal adding on how it happened
It is incredible. It started with a lunch between me and Kevin, and I can’t believe we’re here now.
Robert Downey Jr on the marvel of how 2 huge studios finally got to create Spider-Man
They really should do one of those breakdown, boring-to-read but somewhat-important-to-read books about all the miracles that had to happen for us to be sitting here today. This turned out so well.
Jon Watts on how he brought a new life to a classing character
I just tried to approach it as the biggest fan possible. If anything, I felt like we were being as true as anyone has ever been able to be about Spider-Man and how he fits into this world.
Tom Holland on how his athleticism and dancing past elevated Spider-Man, with one caveat
We were able to do things as Peter Parker that they probably hadn’t been able to do in the past. Jon would be like, ‘Can you just backflip off that wall and land on that beam?’ And I’d go, ‘No Jon, I can’t do that. I’m not that good, dude!’
Tom Holland on how prior Spider-Man actors influenced his portrayal
I had to keep reminding myself when taking on this character is that Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man had such a huge impact on me as a kid. He was my role model. I had to keep reminding myself that I’m going to hopefully have that same impact on kids of a younger generation. I wanted to do them proud.
Robert Downey Jr on being the “godfather” of the MCU
The great thing about life is good things happen and you get inflated. You think, ‘Oh my god, I’ve created everything that’s going my way’ and then things happen where you realize, ‘Oh, there’s a little evidence to the contrary.’ At this point, you go back to, ‘It’s just nice to be on this call sheet.’
Michael Keaton on which is funner to play: hero or villain?
I think actors tend to be drawn towards villainous characters. It’s clichéd, but tends to be true that if you delve into the dark side, it gets interesting. I thought that was a really interesting way to go, making this person approachable is timely; he has a legitimate gripe and legitimate arguments.
Newcomer, Jacob Batalon, on what he things the film’s message is to kids
Our message is that you don’t have to be the jock or the cool person in high school to be yourself.
Laura Harrier adding what she thinks the message is
You don’t have to apologize for who you are. Everyone in this movie is different, but genuinely themselves.
And Zendaya, adding to Laura’s and Jacob’s sentiment and nailing her character
It’s OK to be weird, if you make things awkward and uncomfortable, that’s cool. I love that Michelle’s outspoken and says what everyone’s thinking, but she just doesn’t care.
Spider-Man: Homecoming is out July 7th.
