Oh, motherhood. It’s beautiful, fulfilling, wonderful, joyful… but also stressful, nerve wrecking, boring and will drive you insane. Especially those early years. Oh my goodness, I cannot tell you how many times I was *thisclose* to running away from everything and everyone. Motherhood is all the good stuff, with more responsibility, more anxiety and more love than you ever knew you could feel. I moved back to Los Angeles when I was a new mom with a 5 month old, and while I had a great family support system, I knew I had to make mom friends who I could get together with to talk about all the crazy that is motherhood.
When I was ready to go out (yes, leaving the baby with a sitter is OK), I started checking out mom groups online via a few group sites. I found one with moms who had kids my daughter’s age that lived nearby, which worked out well. Our first gathering was quickly set- a fun mom dinner meet. That quickly turned into a wine session, followed by group karaoke, lots of hugs, laughter…and, well, it felt good to be surrounded by women who were going through exactly what I was!
One night out, turned into more…then family outings, birthdays and more. Though the group is no longer exists, I made a few wonderful friends who I still connect to even now, almost 8 years later.
Every mom needs to have mom friends who get it.
In “Fun Mom Dinner,” four moms (played by Toni Collette, Molly Shannon, Bridget Everett, and Katie Aselton) whose only common ground is their kids’ preschool class, decide to get together for a harmless “fun mom dinner.” The night begins as a disaster, but the combination of alcohol, karaoke, and a cute bartender, leads to an unforgettable night where these seemingly different women realize they have more in common than motherhood and men. Fun Mom Dinner is now in select theaters and On Demand, find it on iTunes.
